Rud Laurids Thygesen (born 15 August 1932 , died 1 January 2019 ) [1] was a Danish furniture architect
Rud Thygesen was born in Sæby , the father was architect Adolf Thygesen (died 1974). The family moved to Hobro in 1938 , and this is where he spent his childhood years.
He moved to Copenhagen in 1955 and took a commercial course at the decoration company Hindsgaul. He then got work at various furniture companies, e.g. Tidens Møbler in Lyngby , which i.a. led furniture by the modern Danish furniture designers such as Hans J. Wegner . He started designing furniture himself and drew e.g. a sleeping bench in 1961 which was shown at the Danish Handicrafts exhibition at Charlottenborg .
On the recommendation of the head of the School of Crafts , he was admitted to this educational institution, despite his advanced age and a lack of carpentry training. He left school in 1966 and that same year established his own design studio together with fellow student Johnny Sørensen .
Rud Thygesen has then, together with Johnny Sørensen, led an internationally recognized work as a furniture designer, and they have, among other things, won 1st prize in the Snedkerlauget’s furniture competition, Danmarks Nationalbank’s jubilee grant, the Furniture Prize in 1978 , the G Prize in Japan and the “Best of Show” prize from the Design Foundation in the USA .
Their furniture is represented at, among others, The Art Industry Museum , Copenhagen, the Art Industry Museum in Oslo , the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and the Museum of Modern Art in New York .
Rud Thygesen lived at the time of his death in Rungsted in North Zealand and is buried at Hørsholm Cemetery.
