About this product
Gianfranco Ferre was an outstanding and flamboyant yet classy and glamorous designer having won many awards for his couture collections and was said to be of the same calibre as Christian Dior in the 1950s. Truly a man unique in the industry at his time.
Although unsigned, (most of his pieces were not signed) this piece would have been designed as a Runway accessory to compliment one of Ferre’s couture fashion shows at Christian Dior in the 1990s. He was known as “the architect of fashion”.
He was appointed as Artistic Director for Christian Dior, replacing Marc Bohan, from 1989 to 1996. Ferre re-introduced the classic style and designs at Dior from the 1950s and his haute couture jewellery collections reflect this.
At the dawn of the 1990s, Gianfranco Ferré brought a sense of bold glamour, imbued with sumptuous materials and rich colours, in voluptuous and exuberant proportions, expressing a femininity that was both sophisticated and contemporary. It was powerful, too, reflecting the growing role exercised by women in society. Moreover, this successor to Yves Saint Laurent and the pairing of Marc Bohan and Frédéric Castet was designed for an archetype: the woman of the moment, and not with specific customers in mind.
From his first haute couture collection, shown in 1989 in the garden of the Hôtel Salomon de Rothschild, up until 1996, Gianfranco Ferré drew on the House’s history and codes, which he infused with the spirit of the time.
His work is rare and highly sought after.
