About this product
Max Muller (1907-1991) is probably the most well known of the Kaufbeuren jewellery makers.
A batchelor, he was a trained concert pianist and orchid lover and cultivator
He started manufacture before the war in Gablonz, Czechoslovakia. He re-opened his business in Kaufbeuren after the end of the war in 1946, following the expulsion from Czechoslovakia.
Max Muller produced chokers, necklaces, brooches, ear clips and decorative applications for clothes.
He met Christian Dior in 1955 at an exhibition, along with a number of other high profile German jewellers – such as Otto Muller and Henkel & Grosse – and was commissioned to design exclusive pieces for Dior. Christian Dior was immensely impressed with the quality of German design and manufacturing.
In the 1960s and 70s, he designed distinctly original lines for the South American market. He had commissions to design jewellery for several historical epics and for a number of World Hairdresser Congress events in 1959, 1961,1962 and 1963.
Max Muller later sold the business in 1987 to Wilhelm Kamp who continued to make jewellery from Max Muller’s designs, continuing to mark the jewellery Max Muller, until it went out of business around 2016.
