Midcentury French Mathieu Matégot Umbrella Stand Circa 1950s
Mathieu Matégot was born in 1910 in Budapest, Hungary, but worked for much of his life in France and Morocco. He is perhaps best known for his “Nagasaki” chair (1954), an oft-replicated design. classic of steel tube and perforated sheet metal. His grasp of form, heavy use of metal, and playful eye ensures he is one of France’s most-loved 20th century designers.
