About this product
Documents mention the Bitossi family in the territory of Montelupo Fiorentino since 1536. In this place of ancient ceramic tradition, a few kilometres from the city of Florence, over the centuries the Bitossis have been kilnsmen, sculptors and painters, but above all they have dedicated themselves to ceramics, introducing an extraordinary stylistic and formal renewal in the early decades of the 20th century. Heir to a long dynasty and tradition, Guido Bitossi founded the Maioliche Artistiche Guido Bitossi factory in 1921, offering a production still linked to tradition and the classic styles of the past with refinement and product study. The evolution in a modern direction was dramatic from the early 1950s, under the artistic direction of Aldo Londi, a man of innate creative and aesthetic sense, attentive to changes in taste and the uniqueness of Italian products. Londi joined Bitossi in 1946 and from then on was the undisputed protagonist of the production style for more than fifty years, first as a painter, then as art director and finally as a tireless experimenter. Many designers have approached the production of Manifattura Bitossi over the years, creating new collections. First of all, the architect Ettore Sottsass, who started to frequent the Bitossi factory from 1955 to experiment and create new modern ceramics. His collections will open a new chapter in the history of Italian design. Bitossi Ceramiche, still located in its historical headquarters dating back to 1929 and led by Ginevra Bocini, the fourth generation of the Bitossi family, represents Italian-made excellence in the world. In 2014, the factory was entered in the Register of Historical Italian Companies established by Unioncamere Nazionale and the Chamber of Commerce.
