About this product
Pair of Sheepskin Leather Club Chairs, Holland, Late 20th Century
Sheepskin Leather Club Chairs – The design and craftsmanship of sheep leather furniture was perfected in Holland and spread to other countries in northern Europe. In terms of construction, the framework for sofas and chairs were initially constructed in mahogany, the preferred hardwood, and then upholstered in 100% natural sheep leather. This type of hide was carefully chosen and preferred over cow leather because of its durability and uniqueness, giving each piece a lovely rich and buttery patina.
By the end of the 19th century a small number of designs became classics, repeated over and over again with individual “twists” incorporated by designers and manufacturers. These subtle twists can be seen through variations in the sizes, the material selection, and even the invisible interior construction. The handmade construction and the quality of the materials renders every chair or sofa a true work of art as opposed to a simple piece of furniture.
